For you diehard bookworms who read LotR, you'll appreciate this part of the website. The character of Eowyn in the books is much less feminine than in the movies, "tamed" only by Faramir after the Houses of Healing in RotK. At the same time, she was very beautiful (just like Galadriel, Arwen, Goldberry and every other female character). She was trained as a shieldmaiden, a female warrior, but was not allowed to fight; this really ticked her off. In fact, in the third book she says that she wanted to die in battle rather than live dishonorably. That's a tomboy if I've ever seen one! Of course, her character (and the entire Rohirrim culture) is remarkably akin to our world's very own Norse people- looking for death in battle to take their place in Asgard, in the great mead-hall of Valhalla. To the Norse, Eowyn would most likely be a Valkayrie, a winged-horse-riding maiden who carried the valiant dead men to Asgard for battle and drunken revelry. Jeez. Even the Vikings were sexist.
